Killarney is, undisputedly, the center of southwest Ireland tourism. The “gateway” to the Ring of Kerry and home to some of Ireland’s most scenic views, Killarney draws visitors year round.
A single, perfect day in Killarney begins early, with a walk through the edges of Killarney National Park. Visiting in the morning, especially if there is a light fog, is one of the most tranquil experiences and a soothing way to being the day.
After a filling Irish Breakfast, drive out to Muckross House and Gardens. Wander the grounds and be sure to follow the path leading to Muckross Abbey. The Abbey dates back to the mid-1400’s and is the final resting place of local chieftains and Irish poets.
Not far from Mucross House, down the Killarney-Kenmare Road, is the Torc Waterfall. Though not the highest waterfall, the area is enchanting. Follow the steps opposite the waterfall to the top for a gorgeous view of Middle Lake.
Continuing along the road to Kenmare is the Ladies’ View, one of the most well-known scenic views in the area, was popular with Queen Victoria and her ladies during a Royal visit in 1861.
After lunch in Killarney, hire a jarvey and enjoy a ride to Ross Castle in a jaunting cart. The jarveys know the history and legends of the area and are quite fun to chat with. Your driver will wait while you tour the grounds of Ross Castle.
Though your schedule today won’t allow for it, plan to return to Ross Castle and take one of the boat tours to Innisfallen Island in Lough Leane. Enchanting walking trails circle the island and the Abbey ruins are simply gorgeous.
After your jaunting cart ride, you’ll want to do a bit of shopping in Killarney. You’ll find everything from local crafts to Aran sweaters. But don’t wait too long- shops close by 6pm most nights!
Finish you perfect day in Killarney at one of the traditional pubs. Enjoy a comforting bowl of stew or flaky fish & chips while sipping a pint and tapping your toes to live music.
And prepare for tomorrow… There is much more to see and do near Killarney!
